International Tennis Tournament St. Petersburg Open-2007 finished today
The first to get their titles in SCC Peterburgsky today were the doubles players, these being Daniel Nestor (Canada) and Nenad Zimonjic (Serbia) who overplayed in two sets (6-1, 7-6) another international pair of Jurgen Melzer and Todd Perry. This is the second St. Petersburg Open title for the winners though with different partners. Nestor took the St.Petersburg Open title in 2000 teamed up with Kevin Ullyett from Zimbabwe, while Zimonjic celebrated victory in 2003 with the Austrian Julian Knowle. It is interesting that the other two 2007 doubles finalists were also winner in St. Petersburg: Melzer (with Julian Knowle) - in 2005, and Perry was victorious last year with the Swede Simon Aspelin.
It would have been a great exaggeration to say that the spectators were waiting for a tough fight in the singles final match. The British Andy Murray seeded second confidently defeated sixth seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain. Murray controlled the whole match winning over his opponent within 1 hour and 18 minutes 6-2, 6-3. This is the third title won by the 20-year-old Scot.
Both finalists warmly thanked the tournament organizers and the spectators who almost completely filled the SCC tribunes, and promised to be back to St. Petersburg next year.
